南西イングランドに決めたわけ

  　今年の目的地はどこにしようか。いろいろ迷った挙句、イギリスに行くことにし
  た。
  　イタリア南部も考えたが、いかにも準備不足だった。せっかく行くなら少々勉
  強して行きたい。池内紀に言わせると、イタリアぐらい、イタリア語を少しでも話
  す、話そうとする人を歓迎してくれる人はいないらしい。それなら少し勉強して
  行っていい。来年は、カルフォルニァの義妹夫婦の家に行く。再来年はノルウェー
  のAnne-Donia/Bjorn一家を訪ねたい。ポーランドから帰って初めての海外ドライ
  ブ旅行で行ったイギリスは、様々な面で良かった。走り残した南西イングランドは、
  出口保夫の「南イングランドを歩く」などを読むと、われわれが走ったところに
  劣らず、自然豊かな素晴らしいところらしい。イギリスを走り尽くすという意味で
  も、ここを走ってみたい。こうして、イギリスが決まったのだ。

 （7/26）スペインの旅行代理店の渡辺さんにFaxを送ったのは7月になってから
  のことだ。それまで、何となく夏休みの計画を立てる気になれなかった。会社の
  仕事の関係でゆっくり夏休みが取れるかひとつ気がかりなことがあったのだ。そ
  れが、何とか目途が立って決めたのだ。一昨年や昨年は会社の役員の夏休み計画
  表を出すように私から言い出したのだが、今年も黙っていたら、一向に回って来な
  い。今（7/26）もって、回って来ないところをみると、そういうことが定着して
  いないのである。計画表が回ってくれば、皆の予定を見ながら、自分の案も表明
  できるのだが、今年は、誰がどんな計画を立てているかも五里霧中なまま、自分な
  りに粛々と計画を立てざるを得ないのだ。それが心理的に踏ん切りをつけにくく
  した大きな理由でもある。（3時40分記）

  　妻は、海外旅行を始めたこの二年を見ていても、自分のほうから積極的に何処そこへ行きたいとは、決していわない。私のほうから提案すると、いいとか悪いとか、コメントする立場を守っている。今年は南イタリアと南イギリスを提案したのだが、私の南イタリアは少々勉強不足な感じがするとの意見に、彼女も「確かにそうね、南イタリアも魅力的だけど」と、結局南イングランドに同調したのである。
  
　  私は読み終わった「南イングランドを歩く」や「ロンドン抜きのイギリス案内」を回したので、彼女も今読んでいる。そのうち、あそこには是非行きたいと言い出すだろう。
    昨日も、その本をかたわらに1993年のイギリスドライブ旅行でどこが一番良かったかと尋ねて来た。
    「どこかひとつに絞るのは難しいが、エディンバラや湖水地方」などと答える と「エディンバラは良かったわ」
    「湖水地方は？」
    「あそこも良かったわね。あのトーマス！」
    「スカイ島は？」
    「あそこも忘れられないわ」
    「ストラッドフォードは？」
    「あそこはウィロマがいて、良かった。」
    どこを聞いても、すごく良かったということになってしまうのだ。
      今度は、それほど広い地域ではないし、ゆっくり走れそうだし、旅慣れしてき たし、その意味では、充実感が深まりそうな気もする。

　1993年のイギリス・ドライブ旅行で行かなかった南西イングランドを、今度はゆっくりと車で旅行する。田舎と自然の良さをたっぷりと味わってくる。先の旅行で手に入れた旅を楽しむノウハウを活かし、思い出の多く残る旅にしたい。先の旅行は「イギリスを走ろうーイギリス・ドライブ紀行」にまとめたが、今回は「続イギリスを走ろう」にまとめたい。

      

(2004.5.17追記：1993年の時は、2500キロメートルも走った。毎日毎日走ってばかりの感じで、くたびれた。同じ場所にもっと長く留まってゆっくりした旅をしたい、という妻の意見を大幅に取り入れて、今回はプランを練った。最初は半島の一番先にある文字通りLand's　Endまで行くつもりだったが、Torquayあたりで引返す旅程を組んだ。それでも総走行距離数は1200キロメートルを越えたが…

Under an hour from the capital by train you can shop all morning, browse a gallery all afternoon, eat at Covent Garden at supper time and take in a West End show before returning to 'London by the sea' - Brighton & Hove.

 
  Brightonに到着.
　12時10分Palace Pier近くに駐車場を見つけ、駐車。　
　　1時間80ペンスのチケットを近くのピノキオという玩具屋さんで買ってフロントガラスに貼り付けた。8.14.月。12時10分とコインでこする。駐車券の売っているというサインは　　。この看板のある店。
　
　早速、Palace Pierを見に出かける。
　　海中に伸びたpier。
   　ゲーム・センター、遊園地、fish & chipsなど、実に様々の施設がある｡
  　デッキで日光浴をしている人々。
  　縁日の趣、賑やかだ。
  　
　海はどこまでも青い。
  　海岸には多勢の海水浴客（日光浴客？）　
 　

　1時30分
　　　今、Palace Pierを見てきたばかり。その近くのBrighton Jacco'sというレストランに寄り、昼食。
　　　2コースで3.55ポンド。
  　　（妻）onion soupとrump steak
  　　（毅一郎）onion soupとlasagne werdi

  　それに紅茶。
  
　　Onion  soupはパプリカの良く効いた、薄味で塩辛くなく、中のタマネギが口に入れるとすぐ融けてしまうおいしさ。お腹の底から暖まる。
　店には、冷房は入っていない。それだけ涼しいということ。
  
  
　The Lanesは、狭いところは２ｍもないような通り。貴金属店、アンチーク店、 galleryが並ぶ。月曜日だが夏休みとあって人通りが多い。

  ロイヤル・パビリオン(Royal Pavillion)
   ジョージ四世
   中国風、壮大な建物。
   驚くべき装飾。19世紀初頭にこれだけ中国を取り入れた建物（内装）を作り得たイギリスの実力。
  　

　Chichester（西サセックスの州都）の(i=インフォメーション)で紹介され、市のセンターでない郊外という条件で探してもらったところ、17マイル走ったところにあった。
　本当にカントリーサイドで、物音ひとつせず、周りには、つばめが飛び回っている。
  ローンテニスコートが二面、ゴルフのショートコース、パッティンググリーン、プール付き。

  家族的雰囲気。
  夕食の時、初老の夫婦と話す。ポロの名手らしい。この家の女主人もポロの名手らしい。とても感じのいい夫婦だ。


夕食：オニオンスープ、ラムのベーコン巻き、ポテト、ブロッコリー、ズッキーニー、

夕食後別室でスフレのデザート、この部屋は、椅子、ソファ、日本の絵、中国の七福神の置物などで溢れるほど。

今日までの総走行距離：120マイル

起床：6時30分起床。
 
 庭を歩く。家のすぐ傍までキジ（オス）が二羽来ている。プールあり。大きな木々。赤い小鳥もいる。色んな鳥の鳴き声。小池に小鴨、大きな魚（コイ）がいる。

　ゴルフ（誰もプレイしていないので、５つボールを持ってやる）。
　家の周りに花々。周りは麦畑、丘。のどかそのもの。
  庭への出口の部屋にポロの写真（この宿の女主人がエリザベス女王からカップを貰っている新聞記事と写真）。
  

朝食：8時10分から
　　　
　　　シリアル＋ミルク、オレンジジュース、ポーチ、焼きトマト、ベーコン、卵、プラム、トースト（ブラック　　　ベリージャム、ハニー、マーマレード）、紅茶 。
　
　　 昨夜話したポロの人とまた話す。Midhurtもいい町だという。ポロの人は乗馬スタイル。Bootsが素敵。（奥さんは部屋で食事）

      これから乗馬へ行くという。乗りたいかと訊く。
      日は燦々と輝き、空気は涼しく気持ちがいい（9時5分記す）

      廊下の壁には、鳥の絵がいっぱい。
      宿泊は、9人+二人×3組
      のんびりとしたムードで、心がすっかり洗われる。
　　　
      食事はどれもうまい。
      ハーニーの味がいい。
      ホワイトとブラウンのトーストも味がある。

      結構従業員が多く、働いている。(女性二人。太ってずんぐりと痩せて小柄と)
      Michelが少し顔を出す。
   
   部屋の隅の男性二人は、昨日ゴルフをやっていた人だ。テニスをやるかと訊いたら、ほんの少し赤くなった。ヒゲをはやしている。近くに住んでいるが泊まりに来たという。

      我々の部屋は、大きいな部屋だ。
      ベッドの高さが1メートルもある。ベッドとベッドの間に大きな机があり、私の
  大きなスーツケースが、その上で広げられる（9時13分記す）

      皿やポットのコレクションが飾ってある。
      大きな古い家具がある。ソファも大きい。

      目の前にパットのホール
      窓の下は藤棚。
  
    昨夜は10時30分に就床。コーヒーを飲んでいたがあっという間に寝込んでし まった。
      （理由）1.静かである。2.空気がうまい。３．一日動き回った。


9時46分：外出

　ローンテニスコートで妻とテニスをやったが、本当に膝にやさしいコートで、疲れない。ボールの弾み方もやわらかい。ただ、ホテルに備え付けのテニス用具はお粗末なものだった。
　ゴルフもショートコースが5ホールあり、誰もやっていないので、ボールを幾つももって一人でのんびり回った。

Chichesterの大聖堂（最も典型的なイングランドのカシードラルと言われる）。

夕食：ホテルで。スープ、ビーフステーキ（レア）、温野菜、チーズ（チャダー、アオカビ）

出発：      10時ホテル発。
      一路、Portsmouthへ。（I）で情報入手。
      V/Jdayのセレモニー。8月16日は、対日戦勝記念日なのだ。
      海軍の戦死者の巨大な慰霊塔の前で。3時〜5時は海軍のタトゥもあるという。
      海岸に沿って歩く。遊園地などの遊興施設が並ぶ。
      海水浴をしている。
      展望台から港を一望。大きい港だ。
      
Bridge Tavernで昼食。

昼食：lite bites,dressed crab,chiken,roll pain(brown & white)
      

 そこからぐるっと回ってフェリーの発着所へ。
     　切符売り場で、フェリーはbusyかと訊くとquietで、何時来ても、次の便に乗れるという。
      そこから駐車場へ引き返す。

      Sealifeを見る。
      これは海の生き物をきわめて身近に感じられるように展示に工夫が施された施設だった。
 
      貝をガラスで覗いたり、カニやイソギンチャクに手で触れる。
      Seajelly(クラゲ)の生まれてから大きくなるまで。
      カレイ、エイの大群。
      シャーク。
      映画のスクリーンのようになった水槽。
次に
      Historic Ships and the Naval Shipyardへ行く。
　　　Historic Shipを見る。時間の余裕は1時間しかないが、1時間では１艘がやっ
  とということで、1860年建造の当時世界一の戦艦　Warriorを見る。
      船の一番下の層まで行ける。数多くの砲門あり。
      サーベル・大砲の弾。大きな鎖。ハンモックで650人が寝るという。
      18人ずつの食事のテーブル。キッチン（天井がガラスで空気が取れる）。
      大きなキャプテンの部屋。
      Masterの部屋、The Commanderの部屋はそれに次ぐ。
      レフテナントは１から５まで。Paymasterの部屋も同じ。
      ボイラーがずらりと並ぶ。
      大きなピストン。
      高いポスト（3本）
      鉄の厚さは4インチ。

    4時のフェリーでWight島へ。
      FishbourneからRydeへ向かう。RydeのTravel Informationでホテルを探す。
      ホテルはbusyで３〜４軒かけたがどこもfull。
      事務員が自ら、いいアイデアがあると言って、このFern Bank　HotelにかけたらOK。
      最初35ポンドでいいかと訊くので、50ポンドでもいいと言ったのだが、見つ かったのは一人30ポンド、1泊の部屋。
      
　　　A3055線でSandownを抜けて進む。

  ド（われわれが最初の入場者だった）。

   動物は自由に行き来できる。人間の方が囲まれた柵の中を通る感じだ（下図参照）。
  羊や馬など人に慣れたものが多い。
  草をやると寄ってくる羊が多い。
  水鳥も慣れていて人を怖がらない。

 　   驚くべき展示の仕方だ。
  　　普通の動物園のように人と鳥とをガラスや網で遮らず、同じ空間に人間と鳥が一緒になる（下図参照）。
  　  一回ずつドアを開けて、閉めなければならないが、鳥も慣れたもので、すぐ目の前で平気でくっ付いていたり頭の上を飛んだりする。
 　　 湿度を必要とするものは、別の建屋に入れられているが、普通の鳥は、open　airである。

　植物園、中央の道路を通って

植物公園
  入場券には、12ポンドで５つの施設がセットと書いてあり、そこにはHouseとしか書かれていない。このHouseの入場料を見ると50pとなっているので、入場券では、そこだけしか入れないのかと思っていたら、公園はタダで誰でも入れ、Houseとは温室のことで、そこに珍しい熱帯植物があるということで、50p取られるのだった。
  
　公園は22エーカーもあり、人々はのんびりと過ごしている。

  Chineは渓谷の意味か。入り口を入るといきなり深い渓谷になっているのに驚かされる。
  入り口の近くの道路脇を流れていた小さな小川が、滝となって20メートル近くも落ちている。
  階段があって降りていく。
  植物の種類も多い。一番下から見上げると40メートルはありそうである。
  行き止まりは、海岸へ出て、眺望が素晴らしい。
  大きな葉の蕗のような植物。
  川の溜りにはコイがいる。

 

Shanklin Chine

'Chine' is a local word and now used only in the Isle of Wight and Dorset. It is of Saxon origin and means a deep narrow ravine, formed by water cutting through soft sandstone leading to the sea. The Saxon name for Shanklin was "Scenc-hlinc" or "cup in the rising ground." Think, too, of the chine of a boat - the shape of a cup - or chine as in an animal's backbone - a deep scooped-out cut. Formation of the Chine has taken place over the last 10,000 years. The stream would originally have flowed into the River Eastern Yar when Sandown Bay was land. This stream is continually cutting its way back to the foot of the Downs from whence it springs. In the latter half of the last century, stones were laid at the top of the waterfall to arrest this progress. There are a continuous series of spring lines on the cliff faces in the Chine. The Island has a number of chines but the two largest are Blackgang, where very little of the original remains, due to erosion, and Shanklin, unique in the quality of its flora and fauna. With a drop of 105ft to sea level, and just over a quarter of a mile, the Chine covers an area of approximately three acres.

ワイト島の西側へドライブし西端にあるThe Needles Parkへ行き、チェアリフトに乗った。

これは乗り甲斐のあるリフトで、眺めもたっぷり楽しめるし、怖さも十分味わえます。

　ぼくがブライトンに留学しいた頃、初めての学校のエクスカーションが、ワイト島一日旅行でした。 ポーツマスからフェリーで渡ります。 島は、本当にこじんまりとした感じです。車でだったら１時間ちょっとくらいで一周できてしまうほどです。 一番印象深かったのは、「リフト」です。 島の中には、日本のスキー場にあるような２人乗りのリフトを使用して、断崖の上から海岸まで（高低差50ｍくらいか）降りることができるポイントがありま す。 乗るやいなや、いままでごく緩やかだった傾斜が突然４５度ぐらいの急激な傾斜に変わり、一気に真ん下の海岸線まで降りてゆくのです。 傾斜が変化する寸前は、前方の視界が「スコン」と消えてしまい、一瞬、水平線しか見えなくなるので、メッチャ怖いです（リフト自体もおんぼろなので、ある 意味怖い……。） あとは、ヴィクトリア女王によるオズボーンハウスやミニチュアヴィレッジ・遊園地などがあり、一日観光としては、ちょうどいいスポットです。

　部屋のトイレのドアを開けると蛍光灯がボーンと音をたてて点く。夜はうるさい。
  この部屋ともうひとつのtwinの部屋しか空いていなかった。Twinの部屋
  はダスターの近くでうるさいので、再度この部屋に戻ってきた。
  部屋は、大きいし、静か。色彩もいい。
  The　Central　Stationのすぐ前にあるホテルだ。
  
　夜、散歩に出た。
  このホテルが面しているQueen Street からHigh Streetを歩く.
　立派なカシードラルがあった。

William the Conqueror marched into Exeter to resolve the first English rebellion against his authority in 1068, two years after the Norman victory at Hastings. Once he got the City under control he had Rougemont castle built on the site of the fort.

Today the walls and gatehouse remain from Norman times and the old gateway to Rougemont Castle contains the oldest non-ecclesiastical Norman arch in the country.

The inner bailey of the Castle houses the County Court built in 1774 for the assizes and is not open to the public but the walls and gardens can be explored.

  者、座って食べるところは静かである。

（2004.5.17追記：これは、市の中心部High Streetの下を通っており、水を供給するパイプを通すために14世紀に作られたものである。案内人がついて、一定の人数のグループで見物するのだが、人がやっと通れるような狭いところもあり、しかも、入った直後、停電し、それこそ真の闇になった。閉所恐怖症の妻は、悲鳴を上げ、しがみついてきた。案内人は、緊急事態発生など言って、嚇かすが、演出であることは分かっていた｡それでも、地底で真の闇に取り囲まれているのは、いい気持ちがするはずもない。あれ以来、妻の閉所恐怖症はますます嵩じて、狭く、暗いところへは、たとえ名所といえど、行きたがらなくなった｡）

Perhaps Devon's most popular tourist centre. Torquay simply sparkles with holiday atmosphere. The 'English Riviera' is just that. Wonderful beaches, colourful marina, excellent theatre entertainment, restaurants, sophisticated nightlife, and a host of family fun attractions. Shopping in Torquay is a delight complemented by its palm trees and sub tropical flora. The town covers the hillsides, built in a great crescent back from the seafront, and the views over the bay from the terraces are positively inspiring.

The ancient town and deepwater port of Dartmouth has to be one of Devon's main tourist attractions.

Dartmouth is set in a picture book location, on the picturesque River Dart, with steep wooded hillsides on either side. Dartmouth's main Embankment runs along the length of the town, from the New Quay - built on reclaimed land towards the historic Bayard's Cove. The Embankment provides visitors with a pleasant and relaxing promenade to stroll down - admiring the sights of the busy estuary or to select from the many boat trips that depart from the waters edge.

The main road never reach down into Dartmouth, protecting the character of the town and helping to retain the historic atmosphere of Dartmouth's narrow streets and buildings. Dartmouth's oldest building, The Cherub Pub ( c1380), in Higher Street, and Agincourt House at Lower Ferry, are both examples of 14th century buildings that have survived in the town.

Dartmouth offers the visitor a stunning array of bistros, restaurants, boutiques and specialist shops. All lining Dartmouth's narrow streets with their long flights of winding steps and intriguing medieval buildings.

The Butterwalk, with its timber framed arcade was built in 1635-40. This impressive façade was damaged by bombs during 1943, but it has now been fully restored.

Begun in 1079 in the Romanesque style, this Cathedral is at the heart of Alfred's Wessex and a diocese which once stretched from London's Thames to the Channel Islands. Its bishops were men of enormous wealth and power, none more so than William of Wykeham, twice Chancellor of England, Founder of Winchester College and New College Oxford. The chantry chapels and memorials of these great prelates are a feature of the Cathedral. These influential bishops also developed, re-fashioned and adorned this great Cathedral. There pilgrims sought the shrine of local saints, notably a former bishop, Saint Swithun, whose festival (15 July) was said to set the pattern for the weather for the next forty days.

The Cathedral was also the church of the community of Benedictine monks from its earliest days. Elements of the monastic buildings may still be traced through the Cathedral Close. Central to the life of the monks was the opus dei (the Work of God), the regular offering of prayer which they sang in the quire. The discipline of praying regularly for the world is continued today, most notably in the said morning office and the daily singing of Evensong by the Cathedral choir. Evensong still takes place in the choir of the Cathedral, the choir stalls with their magnificent gabled canopies, elaborately carved with flowers and plants, owls and monkeys, dragons, knights and green men.

The Great Hall 
The only surviving part of Winchester Castle, this 13^th century hall was the centre of court and government life.

The Round Table 
Closely associated with the legend of King Arthur, the Round Table has hung in the Great Hall for over 600 years.

The south-west quarter is a fascinating area which has played an important part in the city’s defences since Roman times. The former site of Winchester Castle, today you can see the legendary Arthurian Round Table in the Great Hall and Winchester’s Military Museums. From the top of the Westgate there is a bird’s eye view of the traditional shops in the High Street. KING ALFRED, THE RIVER & ST GILES HILL

Two of the city’s greatest natural assets, the River Itchen and St Giles Hill, dominate this area, as does the statue of Winchester’s most famous citizen, King Alfred. Go off the beaten track and explore lesser known but historic eastern Winchester. The views of Winchester from St Giles Hill are worth every step of the short climb. Guildhall The Victorian Guildhall is now a conference centre and the Tourist Information Centre is located on the ground floor. The Guildhall Gallery and Courtyard Café Gallery feature a changing programme of art, sculpture, ceramics and modern works.

Abbey House and Gardens
Next to the Guildhall is Abbey House, the Mayor’s official residence. Abbey Gardens is a small floral public park on the site of an abbey founded by King Alfred’s wife, Queen Ealswith, it includes a children's play area.

City Mill (National Trust)
Built in 1744, the City Mill has an impressive mill race, an attractive island garden and a gift shop.

River Itchen and the Weirs Walk
The fast-flowing clear chalk stream is world-famous for trout. The Weirs Walk alongside the river leads to Wolvesey Castle and the Water Meadows path to St Cross.

City Bridge
Ancient river crossing place and entrance into the city. The only surviving part of the city’s Roman wall can be seen nearby.

Chesil Rectory
A timber-framed house - the oldest in Winchester - the Old Chesil Rectory dates from 1450 and is now a restaurant.

St Giles Hill
Footpaths and steps lead to the top of St Giles Hill, where there is a tranquil green space offering views of city, cathedral, college and as far as St Catherine’s Hill and the Hospital of St Cross. Ideal for picnics.

The Sunset Walk
The Sunset Walk is a detailed self-guided walk through this area, available from the Tourist Information Centre.

National Trust gifts, flowers, prints and framing plus a dressmaker’s paradise.

Winchester College(チャペル、宝物）
The oldest continuously running school in England founded, in 1382 by Bishop William of Wykeham. Old boys are known as Wykehamists. The nearby Wykeham Arms on the corner of Canon Street and Kingsgate Street is a perfect spot for a delicious meal or a quick drink - look out for the old school desks in the bar area.

City Museum
Tells the nationally important story of Winchester from Roman to modern times. Included in the collections are two reconstructed Victorian shops.

IN AND AROUND THE HIGH STREET

Winchester’s historic High Street was the Romans’ east to west route through the city. Today it is pedestrianised and perfect for shopping. In the nearby side streets, speciality shops and boutiques sell traditional and antique, modern and designer goods. The Square, site of William the Conqueror’s treasury, is of particular note to serious shoppers. The High Street High Street stores in an historic setting, plus a few surprises.

City Cross
The 15^th century city cross is also more usually known as the Buttercross. A narrow passage leads to Great Minster Street passing the small hidden church of St Lawrence in-the-Square.

The Square and Great Minster Street
Not a square, more of a T shape! Site of William the Conqueror’s treasury, today this is a very attractive shopping area for crafts and interiors, kitchenware and gifts, clocks, traditional clothes and shoes. A contemporary gallery, delicatessen, good restaurants and tea rooms.

Little Minster and St Thomas Street
For jewellery, antiques, interiors and fine wines.

Jewry Street
Once the city’s Jewish quarter, today you will find restaurants, bars, antiques, health foods and the library.

God Begot House
Look down Royal Oak Passage to see the 16^th Century origins of this building on the site of Queen Emma’s manor. Lloyds Bank opposite occupies the old Guildhall. A curfew bell tolls at 8pm each evening from a bell tower at the rear.

Parchment Street and St George’s Street
Fashions and jewellery, toys, giftware, cards, fine art, clocks and antiques, plus traditional hardware and ironmongers shops.

The Brooks
Winchester’s modern shopping centre incorporating the Brooks Experience, for a view of life in Roman and Medieval Winchester.

The Market
The city’s provisions market takes place on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday selling food, clothes and household goods. Flowers are sold all week.  The biggest farmers' market in the country also takes place on the last Sunday of most months
